Summary
If the displays connected through a Plugable DisplayLink-based docking station or USB graphics adapter stopped working after upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura, DisplayLink Manager may no longer be running correctly or may no longer have the required macOS Screen Recording permission.
First confirm that DisplayLink Manager is running and has the required permission. If the displays are still not working, perform a clean reinstall using the current Plugable-recommended DisplayLink Manager version for macOS 13.
Applicable To
This article applies to:
- Plugable DisplayLink-based docking stations
- Plugable DisplayLink-based USB graphics adapters
- Macs running macOS 13 Ventura
If you are using macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe, or a newer version of macOS, refer to Plugable's current DisplayLink troubleshooting guidance instead.
Answer
DisplayLink-connected displays require the DisplayLink Manager application to be installed, running, and granted the required macOS Screen Recording permission.
A macOS update may require DisplayLink Manager or its permissions to be restored before DisplayLink-connected displays will work again.
1. Confirm DisplayLink Manager Is Running
Open Finder > Applications and launch DisplayLink Manager.
Confirm that the DisplayLink Manager icon appears in the macOS menu bar.
If the displays begin working, no additional steps are required.
2. Check Screen Recording Permission
Open:
Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording
Confirm that DisplayLink Manager is enabled.
If you enable or change this permission, macOS may require DisplayLink Manager to quit and reopen before the change takes effect.
If the displays are still not working, continue to the clean reinstall procedure below.
Clean Reinstall DisplayLink Manager
1. Disconnect the Plugable Product
Disconnect the Plugable DisplayLink-based docking station or USB graphics adapter from the Mac.
If the product has an external power adapter, disconnect power from the product as well.
2. Remove DisplayLink Manager
Use the DisplayLink Installation Cleaner for macOS to completely remove DisplayLink Manager and its associated components.
For detailed instructions, see:
How to Uninstall DisplayLink Manager Software on macOS
3. Restart the Mac
After the cleanup is complete, restart the Mac using:
Apple menu > Restart
4. Install the Current macOS 13 DisplayLink Manager Version
Download the current Plugable-recommended DisplayLink Manager version for macOS 13 Ventura from Plugable's DisplayLink Drivers and Software page.
Follow Plugable's macOS 13 DisplayLink Manager installation instructions to complete the installation and grant the required macOS permissions.
5. Reconnect the Plugable Product
After installation is complete:
- Reconnect power to the Plugable product, if applicable.
- Reconnect the Plugable product to the Mac.
- Confirm that DisplayLink Manager is running.
- Confirm that the external displays are detected.
Important Note
macOS 13 Ventura is a legacy macOS release. Plugable provides a specific legacy DisplayLink Manager version for macOS 13.
Do not install a DisplayLink Manager version intended only for newer macOS releases. Use the version listed for macOS 13 on Plugable's DisplayLink Drivers and Software page.
