If I Add a DisplayLink-Based Docking Station or Graphics Adapter to My System, Will That Prevent My System’s Built-In Video Outputs From Working?

Applicable To

Compatible Windows and Mac computers used with Plugable DisplayLink-based docks or USB graphics adapters.

How the Displays Work Together

The built-in HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or Thunderbolt video outputs use the computer's native display capabilities. A DisplayLink-based dock or adapter adds USB graphics displays through DisplayLink software. These connections can operate at the same time when the computer, operating system, and products support the chosen setup.

Important Notes

The computer's native display limit still applies to displays connected through its built-in video outputs. DisplayLink displays have their own product and software requirements.

On macOS, DisplayLink Manager must be installed, running, and granted the required screen access permission for DisplayLink-connected displays to work.

The number of displays and achievable performance depend on the computer, operating system, USB connection, adapter or dock, and display configuration.
