The TBT4-UDZ has internal components that may from time to time require firmware updates in order to ensure the best overall compatibility and performance.
A graphical firmware update utility is available for Windows that can read the firmware versions within a specific TBT4-UDZ unit in order to determine if an update is required, and if necessary apply the appropriate updates.
As of this writing, the firmware update utility can provide an update to the DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (aka DP MST) video chipsets within the unit as well as updates to the USB hub chipsets within the unit.
Why You Might Need to Update the Firmware
A firmware update may help resolve the following issues:
- Display instability such as intermittent flickering, flashing, or a black screen
- Display not detected after waking from sleep, or is detected but no image is displayed
- DisplayPort display not detected, but using HDMI for the same display works as expected
- Unexpected behavior within Windows when manually ejecting dock-connected USB devices from within the OS

How to Update the Firmware of a TBT4-UDZ
To update the firmware of a TBT4-UDZ, you will need a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, or USB4 support built in. Computers with USB-C support only may also support the update process if they support USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode.
Please note, the firmware update cannot be performed on a Mac or Linux system.
