Why Do Blue Light Reduction Apps Not Work With My Silicon Motion USB Dock or Adapter

Last Update: September 25th, 2026

Summary

Blue light reduction features such as Windows Night light, macOS Night Shift, and f.lux do not apply their color changes to monitors connected through a Silicon Motion-based USB docking station or graphics adapter. This is a limitation of the Silicon Motion USB graphics software, not a sign that the monitor or dock has failed.

Applicable To

Plugable docking stations and USB graphics adapters that use Silicon Motion USB graphics technology on Windows or macOS.

What Can I Do

If your monitor has a built-in low blue light, reading, or warm color mode, you can enable it using the monitor’s own on-screen menu. The available controls vary by monitor model. Displays connected directly to the computer’s native graphics output may continue to respond to the operating system’s blue light setting.

Important Notes

This limitation applies to the Silicon Motion-driven display output. A dock may also have a video output using a different technology; its behavior can differ. Check your Plugable product’s specifications if you are unsure which output drives your monitor.
