Can I Use the USBC-6950M in a Four-Monitor Setup on an Apple Silicon Mac?

Yes, but there is an important distinction: the USBC-6950M adds two external displays using DisplayLink technology. Reaching a total of four external monitors depends on how many additional displays your specific Mac can support natively.

In other words, the USBC-6950M can be part of a four-monitor setup, but it does not turn every Mac into a four-external-display system by itself.

Summary

The Plugable USBC-6950M provides two HDMI outputs, each supporting up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60Hz on compatible displays.

Because the adapter uses DisplayLink technology, these two displays do not rely on the Mac's normal native external-display limit.

Base M4 and M5 MacBook models can support up to two native external displays on supported configurations while continuing to use the built-in display.

When combined with the two DisplayLink outputs from the USBC-6950M, these systems can be used as part of a four-external-monitor setup without relying on the closed-lid behavior required by base M3 MacBooks.

Pro and Max versions may provide additional native display capability depending on the exact processor and Mac model.

Requirements

Before setting up multiple displays with the USBC-6950M, verify the following:

  • Native displays are connected using ports and adapters supported by your specific Mac.
  • Your Mac's native display capability has been verified for its exact processor and model.

The Screen Recording permission is required because of how macOS allows DisplayLink Manager to create the additional displays. DisplayLink does not use this permission to store or record the contents of your screen.

Important Notes

Four 4K 60Hz Displays Does Not Mean Every Workload Will Perform the Same

A monitor displaying a 4K desktop at 60Hz is different from simultaneously playing four high-bitrate 4K 60Hz videos.

DisplayLink uses the host computer's CPU and GPU resources along with USB data bandwidth to create its displays. Performance can therefore vary depending on:

  • Mac model and processor
  • Number of displays
  • Display resolution and refresh rate
  • Applications being used
  • Amount of movement on screen
  • Other workloads running on the Mac
  • USB devices sharing system resources

For typical productivity workloads, DisplayLink is designed to provide additional desktop space. It should not be treated as a replacement for native GPU display outputs for gaming or other latency-sensitive, graphics-intensive workloads.

DisplayLink-connected displays do not support HDCP-protected video playback.

This can affect services and applications that use copy protection, including some content from streaming platforms.

If HDCP-protected playback is required, use a native display connection rather than a DisplayLink-connected monitor.

HDMI-to-HDMI Connections Are Required

The USBC-6950M's display outputs are HDMI.

Connect them directly to HDMI inputs on the monitors using HDMI-to-HDMI cables.

HDMI-to-USB-C monitor connections are not supported by this adapter.
