When multiple network adapters are active on a Windows PC, Windows may not automatically prioritize a wired Ethernet connection over Wi-Fi, which can affect network speed and stability. Manually adjusting the network adapter metric in Windows forces traffic through the preferred adapter.
Instructions
- Press Windows Key () + X (or right-click the Start Menu button) and choose Network Connections.
- Select Change Adapter Options.
- Right-click the network adapter you wish to set to highest priority and select Properties.
- Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- On the General tab, click the Advanced button.
- Uncheck Automatic metric.
- Enter a number in the Interface metric field, where lower numbers designate higher priority.
- Click OK on all open dialog windows to accept the changes.
Expected Result
The designated network adapter will take priority over other connected network interfaces, routing primary network traffic through the preferred connection.
