How the TBT-UDH2 Charges Your Computer
To find out how fast the dock will charge your system, check your manufacturer's specifications for the maximum wattage accepted specifically over the Thunderbolt or USB4 port (this often differs from the wattage of the charger included in the box). The dock supports two Power Delivery standards:
Standard Power Range (SPR): Supports charging up to 100W (20V/5A). The majority of computers on the market today, including modern 14-inch MacBooks and older M1/M2 16-inch Macs, use SPR and will max out at 100W.
Extended Power Range (EPR): Supports charging up to 140W (28V/5A). To take advantage of the full 140W over Thunderbolt, you need a compatible system, such as a 16-inch MacBook equipped with an M3 processor or newer. Windows laptop capabilities depend entirely on the manufacturer's specifications.
How to Power High-Performance Laptops
Gaming laptops and desktop replacement workstations often ship with chargers well over 140W. While the dock can provide power, these heavy-duty systems typically require their original proprietary power supply to operate at full performance. If they run on dock power alone, the laptop will throttle its performance to fit within the dock's power envelope (100W or 140W, depending on whether the laptop supports SPR or EPR charging). When this happens, you might notice the laptop running more slowly or even experiencing system instability. Because of this, if your laptop's original power supply is over 140W (or over 100W for SPR systems), we recommend keeping it connected to the laptop while using the dock.
