Why Do My DisplayLink Connected Monitors Show a Black Screen with Only the Mouse Cursor Visible?

Problem Summary

DisplayLink relies on the computer’s graphics processor to render the Windows desktop before transmitting it to the connected monitors over USB. On some desktop computers, if the graphics processor does not detect a directly connected monitor, the DisplayLink monitors may show a black screen with only the mouse cursor visible.

This is especially common in KVM-style setups where all monitors are connected to a DisplayLink dock that is switched between two computers using a USB Sharing Switch, such as USB3-SWITCH2.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Ensure the DisplayLink driver is the latest version available from Plugable. To update the driver, please use the steps for your operating system:
    1. For Windows
    2. For macOS
  2. On Windows, install the latest graphics driver available from the computer or graphics card manufacturer’s support page.
  3. On macOS, install the latest available macOS updates. Graphics driver updates are included with macOS rather than distributed separately.

Expected Result

The monitors connected through the Plugable DisplayLink device should display the complete desktop rather than a black background with only the mouse cursor visible.

If the Issue Persists

Connect a monitor directly to an HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA output on the computer, then restart the computer with the directly connected monitor turned on.

If this resolves the issue, the computer’s graphics processor was likely not remaining fully active without a directly connected display. Keeping a monitor connected to the computer’s native video output is the most reliable solution.

If permanently connecting another monitor is not practical, an HDMI or DisplayPort display emulator, sometimes called a dummy plug or headless display adapter, may provide the same result. Plugable does not currently offer or test these adapters, so compatibility cannot be guaranteed.

If the issue continues, contact Plugable Support at support@plugable.com. Please include the Plugable product model, the computer make and model, how each monitor is connected, and the output from the PlugDebug diagnostic utility.
