Summary
When using the Plugable TBT3-UDV with certain Windows 10 or Windows 11 systems, the two USB 3.0 ports on the back of the dock closest to the Ethernet port may not be detected correctly.
Installing the Plugable-provided ASMedia USB 3.0 Host Controller driver typically resolves the issue.
Applicable To
This article applies specifically to:
- Plugable TBT3-UDV Thunderbolt 3 Dock
- Windows 11
- Windows 10
The TBT3-UDV is a discontinued Plugable product, but Plugable continues to provide technical support for existing customers.
Answer
The TBT3-UDV contains two separate USB 3.0 host controllers.
The two lower USB 3.0 ports on the back of the dock, located closest to the Ethernet port, are connected to an ASMedia ASM1042A USB 3.0 Host Controller.
The two upper rear USB 3.0 ports and the USB 3.0 port on the front of the dock use a separate Fresco Logic USB controller.
On certain Windows 10 or Windows 11 systems, the ASMedia controller may not be recognized properly, causing only the two lower rear USB ports to stop working.
Install the ASMedia USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver
- Connect the TBT3-UDV to the Windows computer. Important: Keep the dock connected to the computer while installing the driver.
- Download the Plugable-provided ASMedia USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver → LINK
- Extract the downloaded ZIP file if necessary and run the driver installer.
- Follow the installation prompts to complete the driver installation.
- Restart the computer.
- After Windows restarts, confirm that the two rear USB 3.0 ports closest to the Ethernet port are now working.
macOS Note
This specific ASMedia Windows driver issue does not apply when using the TBT3-UDV with macOS.
No separate ASMedia USB host controller driver installation is required on macOS.
