Why Are My USB Devices or Displays Not Detected After Waking From Sleep or Rebooting on macOS With My TBT3-UDZ?

On occasion externally connected USB devices, internal docking station components (such as Ethernet, audio, and card readers), or attached displays may not be detected after waking a macOS system from sleep or after a reboot while using the TBT3-UDZ dock. This behavior is can occur on both Apple Silicon M1 or newer based Macs or older Intel-based Macs and is commonly resolved by resetting system management components or performing a full system power cycle.

Instructions

If using an Intel-based Mac:

  1. Unplug the dock from the Mac and unplug power from the dock.
  2. Leave the dock disconnected until the final step.
  3. Perform an SMC reset by following Apple's guidelines (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295).
  4. Perform an NVRAM/PRAM reset by following Apple's guidelines (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063).
  5. Log back into the Mac and wait about 30–60 seconds.
  6. Plug power into the dock first.
  7. Plug the dock into the Mac using the provided Thunderbolt 3 cable that the dock shipped with to see if the behavior has improved.

If using an M1 or newer based Mac:

  1. Unplug the dock from the Mac and unplug power from the dock.
  2. Leave the dock disconnected until the final step.
  3. Shut down the Mac fully by clicking the Apple menu and selecting Shut Down.
  4. Wait 60–90 seconds after the Mac has shut down.
  5. Turn the Mac back on and log in.
  6. Wait about 30–60 seconds after logging back in.
  7. Plug power into the dock first.
  8. Plug the dock into the Mac using the provided Thunderbolt 3 cable that the dock shipped with to see if the behavior has improved.

Expected Result

After the above steps it is expected that the dock and all internal and externally connected devices should now function normally again.
